Part 2: Does my past dictate/predict my future?

“Things have been hard, so don’t be stupid”. ( A post I saw from friend Chasse BD)

When I analyze power files in cycling, we use something that’s called a “Performance predictor”. We take historical power data from days, weeks, months, and years past. We massage in rest, off days, and other cycling-related activities to predict future performance. It’s been proven to show that you can actually “predict”, to a certain level of confidence, future results.

How does that work in life? That’s a more complex question. Let’s take the average recreational cyclist/age group athlete. He/she is in their 40’s+. Active, healthy, professionally driven, reasonably happy, with some “vices”. Since 2020, things have been really hard. Motivation (exercise) has been minimal, the job has been a royal pain, and time with family has been challenging.

Here are some tips on how to predict a healthier future with your current lifestyle.

1- Have you fallen off the fitness bandwagon in the past few years? If you stay fit, you reduce the risk of many life-threatening illnesses like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. You are also able to withstand stress (hello, have you been stressed the past few years?), which is associated with a longer lifespan. Yes, this is painfully obvious, but when it comes to fitness I’m not going to BS around.

2-Nutrition: Nutrition is something that is very easily changed. Poor nutrition is one of the easiest things to fix. Cheetos/beer or veggies/sparkling water? Here are the obvious 3 points.

  1. Eat a variety of nutrient-dense foods from all the food groups.

  2. Limit foods with too much saturated, trans fats, or loads of sodium.

  3. Choose plant-based meals frequently.

3-Why should we stop at veggies? Reducing alcohol intake, drinking more water, sleeping (OMG this is my nemesis), and the big one..smoking.

Why did I post something so basic for almost all of us? Because, as Chasse said, “Things have been hard, so don’t be stupid”. Don’t let poor decisions over the past few years predict your future. Simple changes yield large results.
