The Iron Hill Twilight is one of Chad's favorite stops in USA Crit Series.
What a blast...short sweet and to the point. The Iron Hill Twilight continues to gleam with success after a total step up by Swagger, West Chester Chamber of Commmerce, mayor and the city. The race surely had 15 to 20 thousand fans.
Call ups and standard fair were getting it rolling after kids/women/amatuer races. The tight, chippy course around downtown included a little kicker at the 3rd turn. Over the years I have heard that that "little kicker" becomes substantial at 30 minutes.
Some initial attacks simply were for not...until a nice 100$ prime set Mark Hekman into a blistering move. He settled in, with no friends (except 7 teammates) on a solo effort to gobble up money. HOwever, he just continued wrecking the course of money and time. Eventually the Toshiba Santos team shut it down jsut enough for Mark to lap the field....straight on after that big Frank drilled it, with David Guttenplan of Time in tow. The rolled some time and virtually securing 2nd/3rd. The order was still in doubt, but secured podium spots taken.
So, Big Red took the win, with Gutt pipping Travieso at the line. What afun race to watch. (Typically watching one rider lap the field is somewhat boring, believe it or not, but Mark is just sooo fun to watch) Kudos to the town and the fans.
Here is Mark after his win:
